How this is calculated

Formula: CAGR = (End ÷ Start)(1 ÷ years) − 1. It is the steady annual rate that would take the start value to the end value over the period.

Use CAGR to compare investments held for different durations on a like-for-like basis — absolute return alone ignores time.

Frequently asked questions

What is CAGR?

CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) is the smoothed annual rate at which an investment would have grown from its start value to its end value, as if it grew at a steady rate each year. CAGR = (End ÷ Start)^(1 ÷ years) − 1.

How is CAGR different from absolute return?

Absolute return is the total percentage gain regardless of time. CAGR annualises it, so you can compare investments held for different periods on a like-for-like basis. A 100% absolute return over 5 years is roughly a 15% CAGR.

Is a higher CAGR always better?

A higher CAGR means faster compounding, but always weigh it against risk and consistency. A volatile fund can post a high CAGR over one window and a poor one over another — look at long, rolling periods.
